Stanton Camiel Obituary

Camiel, Stanton "Shimon" 10/17/36 to 05/26/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Beloved husband and father, born in San Diego to Zel and Jeanne Camiel, Stan attended Jefferson Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High and San Diego High class of '54. He loved his Cavers. His college years were spent at UCLA, UC Berkeley and San Diego State. In 1959, he immigrated to Israel and spent 17 years on Kibbutz Naot Mordacai where he began using his Hebrew name "Shimon". He loved kibbutz life, working in agriculture, teaching English, and then working in health education. Returning to San Diego, he earned Masters degrees and a PhD. in Health Education and Public Health. He worked for North County Health Services as a Health Educator, and as a consultant for the City of San Diego as a passionate advocate for Health Education and Services for the Homeless population. He also volunteered for the Social Action Committee of Temple Emanu-El, and The Alzheimer's Association to name a few. Shimon and his wife, Joyce Camiel, travelled the world- visiting 52 countries. His bucket list was not completed. He enjoyed many long friendships, including his old high school buddies - The Old Farts Club, and walking miles on end with Dan, Frank and friends, often wearing out his co-walkers. While nearing completion on his second PhD., he began having problems with concentration and memory and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at age 63. Shimon attacked his disease with vigor and typically, became an advocate for Alzheimer's Association lobbying in Sacramento and speaking around San Diego. Thanks to the Alzheimer's Disease Research center at UCSD, he immediately became involved with ADRC support group as well as entering into drug research trials. His last project was writing and publishing three delightful memoirs: Outhouse War and Other Kibbutz Stories, Zelig's Odyssey and The Canyon Kids. He had many wonderful caregivers: Mako Sakata and all the folks at Silverado Encinitas and Silverado Hospice are among the many to be thanked. A devoted father, he loved spending time with his family. Shimon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce Camiel, and children Yardena, Daniel and Naftali Camiel, stepsons Greg, Bill and David (deceased) Glassman and first wife Susan Blankfort, grand- children: Brittany, Erin, Hanna, Max and Bianca, great-grandson James, brother Jack Camiel and numerous cousins. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 29th, at 11 a.m. at El Camino Memorial Park (Sorrento Valley), 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego Ca. 92121. Stan and I were best friends in San Diego in our early years. We spent many happy hours at each others houses. When my mom passed in 2004 he came to her house and we were able to reminisce about our wonderful times there.

Our condolences to Joyce and the Camiel family. Shimon was wonderfully creative and passionate about public health. We loved his book - The Outhouse War and Other Kibbutz Stories! Linda and Pietro

I am so glad to have known Shimon! What a unique, bright, caring, funny (and even mischievous), brilliant and larger than life individual! Knowing him was a gift I shall always cherish.

Stan was a close friend when we were at San Diego High. I remember his great laugh, the day he played Rhapsody in Blue on his piano when I was visiting, and his joining me and my family for a week at Lake Gregory in Crestline. After losing contact with him I was happy to find he was on the SDHS Class of 1954 reunion committee and remembered our days at SDHS. He was a marvelous person. May his family find peace in knowing he lived a worthy life.

A loss to his family and community....

My condolences to Shimon's family and friends on the loss of such a wonderful man. He contributed so much to his community. I was a health educator for Planned Parenthood in the 70's and met him while doing training for community clinics. His enthusiasm, dedication and care for those in need remained in my memory all this time. He lit up a room and always elicited stories and ideas from all. It was a joy to run into him in recent years - in the 90's when I worked as a Public Health Educator and again a few years ago at the YMCA with his aide. His legacy is enduring. Peace be with you,
