Ann Allred Obituary

Allred, Ann McClelland 05/30/1938 ~ 05/20/2013 In Loving Memory DEL MAR -- Ann McClelland Allred of Del Mar, CA, passed away on May 20th at the age of 75, after a valiant and courageous battle against an aggressive form of ALS. She was a beautiful, caring, giving, and kind-hearted woman who will be greatly missed. Ann's loving family, led by her husband of 56 years, Doug, her five children and their spouses, Doug Jr. and Margie, David and Susan, Richard and Amy, Linda and John Lynch, John and Kirsten, and 14 Grandchildren, Dougie, Casey, Lexi, Jack, Ruby, Jake, Lindsay, Lilly, Leah, Beau, Ila, Shay, Linna, and Judd were able to gather around Ann and provide comfort. Ann was born in Pasadena, California where she attended grade school and developed a great love for the outdoors and a positive "get it done" attitude. Then she relocated with her family to Burlingame near San Francisco and attended Burlingame High for a short time, before moving to Phoenix, Arizona where she graduated from West Phoenix High school. She was an accomplished athlete, particularly excelled at competitive swimming. She attended the University of Arizona, where as a freshman she met an Arizona football player and senior business school student, Doug Allred. After Doug graduated from the Navy Reserve Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island, they married on April 22nd, 1957 and moved to Coronado, where Doug became a UDT officer in Team 11, which now is SEAL Team 5. While in Coronado, both Doug and Ann developed a great love of the San Diego area. As their young family began to grow, Doug and Ann decided to remain in San Diego while Doug entered the commercial real estate business. Ann was always supporting Doug in his efforts and together they formed the Douglas Allred Company, one of San Diego's and Arizona's most illustrious real estate development companies. They raised a beautiful family and proudly watched all five children graduate from college, four from USC and one from Cal Poly San Louis Obispo. Ann and Doug always attended their children's athletic events including football, tennis, track and field, wrestling, baseball, and basketball at Torrey Pines High School, USC, Cal Lutheran and in the NFL. In more recent years, she was a regular at her 14 grandchildren's tennis matches, lacrosse games, soccer games, or football games. Ann Allred was the quintessential, wife, mother, and grandmother. Ann was a great patriot and supporter of our country and its Military. Ann and Doug's philanthropy has been extensive and included Torrey Pines High School, USC, University of Arizona, the Hall of Champions, Navy Special Warfare Family Foundation, Junior League, Scripps Hospital Polster Cancer Center, The John Lynch and John Allred Golf Classic, the Nativity Catholic Church, and the San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club including the Douglas Allred Branch. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Norma McClelland. She is survived by her husband, Doug Allred; her brother, Don McClelland and his wife Edna; her five children and their spouses; and her 14 loving grandchildren. Ann will be buried at a private gravesite service in Santa Barbara, California. A Memorial Mass and celebration of Ann's life will be held at 11:00 AM on her birthday, May 30, 2013 at the Church of the Nativity, 6309 El Apajo Road, Rancho Santa Fe, CA. 92067. A private reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the Allred Family would appreciate donations in Ann's name to any of the philanthropies previously mentioned and dear to her heart.

What an example the Allred family will always have in Ann. Above all the great accomplishments she had in her life, her greatest was LISTENING. She'd listen to you with her eyes! I loved her.

Life's paths circle around, that is --
As a teacher, I gave my heart to kids for 39 years, including three of Ann's five children. Years later, after my own two sons were grown, I was walking up to town from our Del Mar cottage, my mind a stew of worry about one of them, and Ann saw me. She was sitting at an outdoor table, leaned over the rail to the sidewalk, and embraced me -- embraced my worries and like the sun on a rainy day made my puddle of woe dissipate. The wonder of Ann Allred. She still lives you know. Her calm, her perspective, her ability to bestow trust in you that she will never repeat your words but hold them in her heart. Kids--be like your mom, your grandma, probably your great grandma by now and grow big hearts.

Ann was important to me, always encouraging as I taught her children, took one on a student European tour, and tutored a couple grandkids. Later as my own sons grew and married and had their own children, she advised when I asked. Ann listened. I loved her. Barbara Bolton Brown

Ann was one of the few friends I could be transparent with, knowing she was listening with her heart, that she would share her insight, and speak our business to nobody else. A rarity. Calm and a lovely lady to the core. Barbara Brown (RSF teacher of Allred children who reflect their mother's positive outlook. Keep it, kids. Do her proud.)

Ann was such a sincere, compassionate, and loving woman. One of the many things I adored about her was her love of family. Doug and her children meant the world to her and she took great pride in all of them. She once told me that if she didn't speak to her daughter every day she felt empty. I feel honored to have called her a friend. My sincerest sympathies to Doug and family.

I'd like to express my deepest heartfelt sympathy to the Doug Sr. and entire Allred Family. Ann was a very special woman; her capacity to make people comfortable and cared for were boundless. I feel so fortunate to have interacted with Ann in my own life, through my inlaws the Staver's. Having lost my own mother at young age I know how sad the Allred's are and feel their pain. I sincerely hope they take solice knowing Ann made the world a better place and will continue that work in eternity.
