Anthony Basher Obituary

Basher, DVM, Dr. Anthony RANCHO SANTA FE -- Dr. Anthony (Tony) Walter Patrick Basher, 54, died Friday, November 9, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona as a result of a fatal auto accident. He was a renowned veterinary specialist in ophthalmology and general surgery in the San Diego area since 1996. Tony was born in Guildford, Surrey, England on March 17, 1958. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London in 1981. He then went on to become board certified in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, then again board certified in ophthalmology at Colorado State University in 1994. Dr. Basher was employed at the Royal Veterinary College in London, as a small animal veterinarian in Calgary, Canada, and a resident at the University of Sakatoon, Canada. He subsequently became a tenured professor and clinician at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. In 1996, he began working at The Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He received a Centenary Award, the Cecil Aldin Award and distinctions in Medicine and Surgery while at the Royal Veterinary College. He was widely published in veterinary medicine textbooks and journals, and a highly sought after speaker at professional conferences. He was very popular among many rescue groups in San Diego, providing free or greatly reduced cost for the care on 100s of homeless animals. He was a member if the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, The British Small Animal Veterinary Association, The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Association, the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association, and the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His interests included skiing, scuba diving, mountain biking, kendo, sports cars, football, travel, malt scotch whisky or a good IPA with friends. He is survived by his parents, Margaret and Erskine Basher of Bexhill-on-Sea, England; three siblings, Philip Basher of Christchurch, New Zealand, Jonathan Basher and Francesca Basher of Bexhill-on-Sea, England. Also surviving is his ex wife, Dr. Kimberly Basher of Boulder, Colorado; his beloved 14-year-old daughter, Ciannon Basher, predeceased him in June 2012. Also, surviving are his beloved pets Cassie, Wolfie, and Mika. Dr. Tony Basher's memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, December 2nd at the Del Mar Country Club, 6001 Country Club Drive, Rancho Santa Fe, CA. 92067. Time: 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 2, 2012. Those who loved and respected Tony are welcome and encouraged to attend. This is a private club and entry is monitored.
