Barbara Ellen Vander Lyke Obituary
Vander Lyke, Barbara Ellen ESCONDIDO -- Barbara Ellen Vander Lyke (Olson), 72, passed away at her home surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. She was born in Rochester, NY on April 2, 1941, the daughter of Albert and Barbara Olson. Barbara was married to Gary Kyle Vander Lyke on May 21, 1960. She worked at Lawson's Jewelers, and for most of her career at Bell Grain and Feed in San Marcos, alongside her dear friend, Milly Burress. She loved animals, loved to paint, and was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Escondido, where she served as a member of the altar guild, bell choir, and also as a member of the Trinity Toy makers. She was generous with her time and talents whether providing someone a ride to church or the doctor, lovingly preparing food for any occasion or providing a smile and a hug to anyone who needed it. She was known for keeping a family tradition of preparing Sunday dinners for her husband, children, and grandchildren and countless other loved ones who were fortunate enough to be considered extended family. Many knew her simply as 'Mrs. V.' She never missed an event that involved her children or grandchildren. Many who frequented Jesmond Dene Park, home of Escondido American Little League, and the Escondido High School athletic fields knew her as well. Barbara is survived by her husband, Gary; two sisters, Eileen Heil (David), and Analis Hall (Bruce); brother, George Olson; brother-in-law, Kirk Vander Lyke (Alice); two children, Gary Vander Lyke and Leila Sackfield (Rick); five grandchildren, Kyle and Tyler Vander Lyke, Ethan and Rick Sackfield and Matthew Hampshire (Danielle) all of whom were the "heart of her heart." She also loved her five nieces and one nephew and many other close friends who she considered family. She was the centerpiece of her family. She spent every Sunday lovingly preparing a beautiful meal for her family. She was an amazing wife, parent, grandparent, sister, and friend. All who met her were taken by her beautiful smile and selfless, loving and kind nature. She was the happiest when she was giving of herself to others. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 22, 2013, at 3:30 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St., Escondido, CA. A reception following a committal will be served in her honor in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name, to Trinity Episcopal Church or Elizabeth Hospice.
