Obituary Condolences

WATRY, BARBARA FRANCES March 6, 1928 to August 28, 2012 Barbara Watry passed away quietly at home as a result of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She had dealt bravely with the blood disease for many years. She was born in San Francisco, CA, to parents Bernal and Gertrude Burrows, both of whom were born in the City. After high school, Barbara attended San Francisco College for Women where she received her elementary teaching credential. She began her teaching career in San Francisco as a first grade teacher, specializing in the teaching of reading. Later in life, after raising a family, she returned to first grade teaching here in San Diego. In 1956, Barbara traveled to Germany to teach in the U.S. Army American schools and it was there that she met and married her husband David, also a teacher at the school. They were married 55 years. Her three children, Paul, David, and Ann, and two grandchildren, Sara and Katey, and one-year-old great-grandson Tatum all brought joy to her life. In retirement, Barbara developed an avid interest in the study of art history. She attended classes for several years and with friends Vi, Ann, and Nancy, traveled to London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to visit art museums and galleries to view the art masterpieces of the world. The four "Art Ladies" had a glorious time with a lifetime of memories. Barbara was also a long-time member of Mission Bay Yacht Club, and with David, sailed competitively in their Lido 14 sloop, winning many trophies. She also enjoyed the social activities at the club. Memorial services will be held at Mission Bay Yacht Club, 1215 El Carmel Place, San Diego, CA, on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Seasons Hospice.
