Benjamin F. Wood Obituary
Wood, Benjamin F. SAN DIEGO -- Benjamin F. Wood ("Ben" as he preferred to be called), was born in Shelton, Washington to Ben and Geneva Wood on September 17, 1941. He died at his home in Durham, CA on November 21, 2012. His children, Debbie Wood Buccola of Durham, and Corey Wood of Brooks, KY, and many other family members were at his side. Ben and his family moved to Cato, NY in 1945 where he lived for seven years. They then moved to the San Diego area when he was 11 years old. As a teenager, he delivered newspapers for the San Diego Union helping him to buy his first car. He graduated with the Class of 1959 at Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Rummel in 1960. They would spend the rest of their lives together until Joan's death in 2006. Ben, aka "Woody" later, worked as a carpet layer at ABCO on Fairmount. In 1963, he began his career as a lineman and eventually overhead electrical foreman with San Diego Gas & Electric. Ben was a brother of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. His job as a lineman involved strenuous physical labor and many times risking his life. In 1971, he survived an electrocution while working on top of a line pole. He retired from S.D.G.& E. in 2000, but he recalled the passion of 37 years with endless stories describing his life as a lineman until his last days. Ben enjoyed working with wood and especially making Christmas ornaments with a Scroll Saw. He also enjoyed traveling with Joan and going fishing. His greatest passion was watching or attending NASCAR races. Ben was a blue collar and blue jean kind of guy who liked his whiskey and cigarettes. He enjoyed giving everyone a hard time and playing practical jokes. For example, Ben could not get off the ground from laughing after he scared both of his children by jumping out of a bush one night. There is also photo evidence that he secured a lawn mower at the top of a line pole. He worked hard all of his life and enjoyed spending time with his family. One sister, Janice Pederson of Rockcreek, Montana and one brother, Ron Wood of Rosebud, Illinois, survive him. Ben has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
