Carl Silvera Avilla Obituary
Avilla, Carl Silvera 04/30/1918 ~ 09/14/2013 POINT LOMA -- Carl was born in Cotati, located in Sonoma County California. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years Geraldine and his son Gerald. He is survived by his children Diane, Darrell and Lyman, and three grandchildren: Karla, Keith and Kristopher. Carl's long career in the tuna industry started in 1937 in San Pedro, California. In the early 1940's he moved to San Diego, married his wife, raised his family as he continued his career in the industry becoming a premier marine engineer. A pioneer in the tuna industry he gained tremendous respect and was well regarded for his extensive knowledge and leadership. His career spanned from the era of pole fishing to modern day purse seining. He and his wife were active members in the Portuguese community, supporting various organizations and were instrumental in starting the Cabrillo Festival. Carl loved his vintage Thunderbird cars and was a long time member ofthe Thunderbird club of San Diego. In his golden years, he could often be spotted sitting on his favorite bench on Shelter Island watching the boats come in. What he enjoyed most were family gatherings. His wry sense of humor and his certainty that he was right will be missed. He will be remembered by his friends and family as a loving and caring man. We will miss you dad. A private memorial mass and celebration of life will be held in the near future.
