DeFrain, Donald James SAN DIEGO -- Donald James DeFrain passed away peacefully March 28, 2013. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 p.m. at San Carlos United Methodist Church, 6554 Cowles Mountain Blvd., San Diego, CA. Don was born on May 29, 1923, in Bay City, Michigan. Growing up, he enjoyed the outdoors and working in the family-owned lumber and carpentry business. Don served in the Army Air Force in WWII in Leyte and Okinawa. Upon his return, he earned a BS in Engineering from the University of Michigan. He married Nancy Jean Madigan in 1947. Don moved to California in 1958 beginning a 38 year civil service career that resulted in numerous awards including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Don was never one to sit still. During retirement, he and Nancy travelled and explored the world.
