Donald L. Tice Obituary
Tice, Donald L. 05/08/1919 ~ 06/27/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Donald L. Tice passed away peacefully on June 27, 2013 with loved ones at his side. He was 94 years old. The eldest of six, he is survived by siblings, Kenneth Tice, Sidney Tice, Winona (Wayne) Gamble and Virginia (Robert) Johnson. His youngest brother, Lincoln Tice, pre-deceased him. During WWII, Don served in the Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific. The family is blessed to have heard his accounts of his experience first-hand. While in New Zealand, he met the girl of his dreams and future wife, Sylvia Jean Delaveau. After the war, Sylvia joined him in the U.S. and they married. They settled in San Diego where they raised their three children. Don and Sylvia loved their home and life in San Diego. In later years, Don was a devoted and constant companion to Sylvia throughout a long illness. When she pre- deceased him in 2005, they had been married for 59 years. In his professional life, Don was an educator in San Diego for over 30 years. Don also kept informed on issues of fitness and health throughout his life. In the early 1960's he began jogging at Lake Murray and daily hikes up Cowles Mountain. The last time he climbed to the top of Cowles Mountain he was 87 years old. Don is survived by his son, David Tice (Mary); and daughters, Jennifer (George) Collins and Donna (Alberto) Schimmelfennig; and his grandchildren, Ian and Stefan Schimmelfennig and Nicole and Gregory Tice. A family memorial service in celebration of his life and scattering of ashes will be held on July 27, 2013. He will be missed.
