Doreen Kay Mercer Obituary
Mercer, Doreen Kay EL CAJON -- Doreen Kay Mercer passed away peacefully on March 5, 2013, with her husband, by her side, after a 6 year battle with Breast Cancer. She is now in the loving arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Doreen will be remembered for her beauty, infectious smile, courage, compassion, faith, unselfishness, positive attitude and strength. She was a loving and outstanding wife, mother and friend. A true Angel, in every sense of the word. Doreen is survived by her husband of 20 years, John and their two children; daughter, Alexia and son, Noah. Doreen was born in Atwater, California, on October 5, 1962, to Gabriel and Geraldine Herrera. After her father retired from the U.S. Air Force, Doreen and her family moved to Lemon Grove, California. Doreen attended and graduated from Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, in 1980. She began a 15 year career in mortgage lending. In the mid 90's, Doreen stopped working to be a full time mom, a position she had always dreamed of having and one for which she was perfectly suited. When her children started school, Doreen began volunteering in their classrooms as an art docent. She worked in both the Alpine Unified and Christian Unified School Districts, until her treatments made it difficult for her to continue. Anything she could do with children involved, made it that much more rewarding. She was a perfectionist at everything she touched. She became involved in the Girl Scouts, the PTA and at one point, was the Vice-President of the Shadow Hills PTA, in Alpine. Later, Doreen worked part-time in the Alpine Unified School District, as an Instructional Aide, where she specialized in students with disabilities. After her Breast Cancer diagnosis, Doreen found her next passion, volunteering for the Alpine Relay for Life events. Over the last 5 years, Doreen was a driving force in the Alpine RFL; usually with her teams, earning more money than any other teams. Doreen stayed heavily involved in her family church, Alpine Christian Fellowship, where she had found her spiritual home 10 years ago. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 11:00 am, at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Dr, El Cajon, CA, 92019. Hawaiian Attire is suggested. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Cancer Center Oncology Medical Group, 5555 Grossmont Center Dr. La Mesa, CA. 91942, Attention: Sue Rose.
