Re: Jack Prodanovich RIP 1913 - 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While Jack will be missed, he leaves behind one hell of a legacy. Jack and his friends were just about first in everything including techniques and gear development. He even pioneered many of the basic gear we use today in blue water hunting.
I feel blessed to have known Jack and his wife. Jack is an inspiration to us all. He gave selflessly to the sport he loved. He remained alert and interested in his sport to the end, constantly sharing his knowledge and humble enthusiasm with others. I’ll always remember the twinkle in his eye as Jack read notes from his little red book—his spearfishing diary. His cryptic notes jogged the whole day's diving memory from his mind.
One could not ask for a better role model.
RIP Jack

Jack...what a guy. Amazing athlete, innovator and inventor.
His contributions and presence have left the world a much better place. What a legacy.
So many memories.
We like to think he and Wally are together again.

Unfortunately, I didn't meet Jack Prodanovich until the later years of his life. But I still had an appreciation of how he helped to open up the sport of ocean diving.
While Jack started diving in the 30's, I didn't make it to La Jolla cove until the mid-40's. But like Jack, I started out with the crude hand-fashioned equipment of the early diving days. All I had was a mask I had made out of a coffee can, with a piece of glass sealed to it to keep out the water. If I remember right, I got the design out of a Boy's Life magazine just published after World War II.
The mask didn't work all that great, and I really came to appreciate the advances in diving stuff that people like Jack helped to foster. He was in every sense, a pioneer of ocean exploration.

I first saw Jack in the mid 1940's..I was just a little kid with my Dad, and we were fishing at the cliffs (Osprey st.)..Jack and a friend were diving near by. My Dad knew Jack, and he yelled to him..."Jack, How about a couple of Ab's for dinner"?..One dive later, Jack threw us a couple of Ab's, and we were happy campers....some 10 years later, I got into diving the cliffs myself, and Jack was always "The Man" when it came to diving, and we all looked up to him....My Wife had Jack make me a spear gun over 30 years ago for my birthday...I still have that gun, and it has brought MANY Halibut to our dinner table...There is one word to describe Jack Prodanovich......"Legend"

He was my hero. Many years ago in Loreto we would dive at first light. His encouragement helped me stay the course in my career. I will see him again before most of you. Still diving at 80.

To the family of Jack Prodanovich: My memories of Jack go back to the 1970s when I had the privilege of diving the Cornoado Islands with Jack and my late husband, Emerson Mulford. And though I was young and had such a zest for adventure, I was humbled by the zest for life Jack displayed that day. He, of course, was skin diving while we were on SCUBA. It was a day in my life I will never forget. Condolences to your family from one of Jack's underwater admirers. Sincerely, Connie Mulford

I have especially fond memories of all the wonderful things you taught Colin and Evan when they were young boys, and the fine times they spent with their Dadbo. It made a lasting impact on their lives ... and mine as well. You are much loved and always remembered. God bless you, Jack.

Hello, Prodanovich family (especially my classmate Milo, PLHS 1961):
It is amazing that a single person can have a life-altering effect on someone else without knowing it. I knew Jack while attending High School, and he was the one adult figure upon whom I could rely.
The teachers seemed to be on lofty pedistals (as were my parents), but the earthy wisdom radiated daily by Jack kept me on an even keel. I will cherish his memory and the very subtle but very real influence he had on my life, probably without his even knowing it.
I cherish his memory. To those left behind, my prayer is that the spirit of God's wisdom will flow through his memory and through each family member and friend. He was, and is, a beautiful person.
Requiescat in Pace.

Stopped by to see if Robin wanted go surfing and Jack wanted to show me a new powerhead he'd been working on. I'm not a diver but he started telling me about it anyway. When I asked him how he was going to test it, he said, "I'll go out and find a shark and shoot him full of holes!" He was kidding me, right?

To Gertie , Kristy , Robin and Milo
I just learned of Jacks passing tonight ( 2-18-08 ) and it is a great loss to both you and his friends and to me as he and Mombo are like my second parents.
I met Jack and Gertie in the mid 50's ( 54 or 55 ) and he and Mombo became like a my own parents and he sort of addopted me and taught me how to dive and get Abbs and Lobester and spear fish and to build spear guns. Jack and I dove together for many years and I always learned something form a trip with him. We spent many long hours in the garage builging guns and slings and tips and just helping in what ever he was doing. I will always remember out trips to Loreteo and Cabo Pumo and Rancho Buena Vista and ever place in between.
Local trips to the Coronados and up and down the coast diving .
I have enjoyed the last several visits with Jack and you Gertie and am sorry I did not know sooner so I could have been there to say good by in person.
Will be coming over next month so will stop by then.
All my Love and thought are with you all.
Take care Mombo and see you soon.

My fond memories of Jack go back over 70 years when he had already established himself in the diving world. As a SDS Zoology major I discussed seashore life with him during summers when I worked for the SD City Schools Maintenance Dept and we had jobs at Point Loma High where he worked. My sincere sympathy to his family.

Jack you were my friend and my teacher, when I had any questions about spearfishing I would come to you. You were always ready with a friendly smile and some astonishing new inventions to share and discuss. Your mind was continually buzzing with ways to improve the sport which we so love.
You will be sorely missed but never forgotten. I pray that God and our mother Ocean will now embrace you for eternity.

To the Family of Jack,
I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of one of the most wonderful men I have ever met. The obituary summed it up; he was a humble man with a zest for life. I knew him in the late 70's and early 80's when I was married to Rick Guseman (Jack used to skin-dive with us). To Jack I was Linda Roo, and he was Jack-a-Roo to me. One of my fondest memories was the yearly Super Bowl parties attended by skin/scuba divers. The highlight was always Jack's famous ciopinno (I have the recipe!) at half-time. I was also honored to be invited to a Bottom Scratcher meeting. Of course, this was years later, and the meeting was mainly focused on reminiscing, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Jack's positive attitude was infectious, and I always enjoyed spending time with him. The world has lost an amazing man who was loved by many. He will be missed.
A new star is shining in heaven tonight.
Sincerely,
Linda

To Gertie, Kristy, Robin and Milo,
I remember as a child all the stories of Uncle Jack diving and catching HUGE fish. I didn't realize at the time that he was an underwater pioneer. For all of his accomplishments, he was very humble. May each of you cherish the memories of Uncle Jack and his legacy will live on in the field of underwater inventions and conservation.
I have the picture of your Dad on his fishing boat the "Pamela Sue" with my family photos.
My best to each of you,
"East Coast Cousin",

Thanks to whomever wrote the memorial piece in UT 2/17,--far more than an obit! I am 86, knew a Bottom Scratcher named Norris, when I worked at Convair; Prodanovich was a hero even then and will long be remembered. Imagine going into that cold water in long underwear as they did before wet suits!

Around 30 years ago Jack invited me to spend an afternoon with him free diving off Point Loma for abalone. He was then three years older than I am now. I did not make the cut for the Bottom Scratchers(one abalone vice the requisite three; Jack more than made up for it). We did not make it to the bare-handed shark capture phase.

To Jacks family,
Jack was one of a kind. He was an amazing creative and loving and caring father.
He was a father to me in my teen years when I needed him the most.
He will always be Dadbo to me.
I was fortunate to have Dadbo and Monbo in those most formative years as guiding lights for me.
Kristy and I have been Sintwisters for over 50 years.
Jacks most endearing term for her was Kitten. I will always remember the wonderful fried abolone that we had thanks to Jack and his diving sport.
I also remember the garage on Arista street full of experimental spears and all kinds of stuff for diving that I did not know about at the time.
What a legacy he has left behind.
I am very proud to have known him.
I was priveleged to get to see him one last time a couple of years ago when I was back in San Diego for my daughters wedding.
Even at 90 yrs old he was just as sharp as I remebered him years ago.
He will be sorely missed.
I will alsways love you Dadbo.

My memories of Jack begin in the early 1950s when my family became neighbors of the Prodanovich family. Their daughter, Kristy, has been a lifelong friend of mine. My mental picture of Jack is of him unloading the stationwagon (not long after retitled the "Woodie,") after a weekend sojourn to the ocean. I also recall watching lobster cook in big pots on the stove when Gertie fixed wonderful food for all of us. They were and still are a wonderful family. Jack was a legend in his own time and had a tirelessly inquisitive mind. He was also very busy most of the time. I don't recall him sitting too much! Another memory stems from one of my visits to San Diego in the early 1990s when Jack was using his rowing machine. Like I mentioned, Jack was always busy. It warms my heart to read the newspaper articles, both old and new, that pay respect to his inventions and innovations in a hobby destined to be his life's avocation. Truly, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

MEMORIES OF A FATHER'S LOVE MEAN MORE AS TIME GOES BY...
Dear Kristy and family,
I have had the pleasure and good fortune to have known Jack since 1963. He always made me feel welcome and never stopped teasing me about one thing or another.
Jack was so busy and productive. His acccomplishments seemed effortless, yet are astounding.
I am proud and blessed to have known this extraordinary man. I will always remember him with love and affection,
Love, Linda

I will miss my father. He was a great Dad and was my hero. He gave us kids a childhood that most could only dream of. Filled with diving, swimming, water skiing, camping, hiking, beach parties and boat trips to the Coronado Islands. What teenage girl could boast of having dove down 30 feet with her Dad to see her very first big shark, in the kelp off the Coronado Islands?
We were raised on dinners of fresh fish that had been swimming in the ocean just hours before. We had black sea bass, white sea bass, halibut, lobster and abalone. We were even given bags of shrimp from friends who owned fishing boats. I was always so excited, and waited in such anticipation, to see what Dad had caught and was bringing home in the back of the old family Plymouth Woodie wagon. It is a childhood I will treasure always, in my heart and in my mind, and it was all because of who my father was.
He leaves a huge empty space in the lives of all who knew him. I loved my "Dadbo" and I will miss him each and every day.
