FLORENCE V. SHIELDS BLAND Obituary
BLAND, FLORENCE V. SHIELDS March 14, 1918 to December 26, 2012 In Memory Of Florence V. Shields Bland, 94, of San Diego, CA, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012. She was born in Montana on March 14, 1918 and grew up in Everett, Washington. After marrying Joe R. Bland, Lt Cmdr. Rt. in June 1946 they then moved to San Diego in 1952 to raise their family. With the death of her husband in 2005, she moved to Fredericka Manor, Chula Vista, where she lived until passing. Having served as the director of Starlight Center in the 1960s, Florence earned her degree and worked as an occupational therapist for 10 years. Her desire to assist others led her to be actively involved in such organizations as Starlight Center, Noah Homes, the Elks Club, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She championed tirelessly for reforms in programs aimed at those who have special needs. A naturally creative person, Florence loved sewing, crafting, and painting. As a master toll painter she continued to delight others with her special personalized gifts. She is survived by her two sons, Robert M. and Jack E. Bland, grandsons, William Samuel and Nathan J. Bland and sister, Barbara Camm. Memorial Service on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1370 Euclid Avenue, San Diego, CA 92105, 619 263-0757. A gathering will be held following the memorial service.
