FRANCES VERONICA BAGNAS

Obituary Condolences

BAGNAS, FRANCES VERONICA September 27, 1922 to February 24, 2012 Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and wife, passed away quietly on Friday, February 24, 2012 with her entire family at her bedside. She was born September 27, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she grew up in a Lithuanian family and neighborhood and spent her early school years speaking only Lithuanian. On a Friday night in 1941, she went to a dance at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where she met a handsome young sailor, Ben Bagnas. Love at first sight, they married three weeks later and were married nearly 60 years. In 1942 the Navy transferred Ben and Frances to San Diego with their infant son, Paul. Three additional children, Ben, Roni and Michael, were born later in San Diego. Throughout the years their military life took them to many duty stations around the globe. She loved to travel. Always adoring, loving and comforting to all around her, she was the consummate "grandma". She unselfishly devoted her life to her large family and community. St. Patrick's Catholic Church and school in North Park were recipients of her generosity where she volunteered and donated baked goods over the years. She and Ben raised their three sons and one daughter with the love of God and the joys of unconditional love. Frances cherished her home in North Park, San Diego where she lived for the past 68 years. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening and was known for rescuing and caring for ailing plants and flowers that had been tossed aside by others. She was a stylish dresser and regularly kept her Friday afternoon hair salon appointment. She was an avid sports fan, a great travel companion, and the family's matriarch. A woman with a kind and gentle soul, her hands were that of an angel, her smile warm and radiant, and her heart filled with an unassuming and all encom-passing love. She touched all of those around her. Frances was pre-deceased by her husband, Ben; and son, Paul. She is survived by her daughter, Roni Clemens (Larry); and her sons, Ben (Tina) and Michael (Gloria) of San Diego. She leaves an extended family of six grandchildren, Bryan (Liz), Michelle (Mario), Tammy (Doug), Matt, Marisa and Jasmine; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Danielle, Rachel, Bryan, Alex, Ana Maria, Estrella, Sara, Stefanija, Ernie, Cameron, Zachary, Christian and Ben. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care shown to Frances by the nurses and doctors of Scripps Mercy Hospital and San Diego Hospice. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 11 a.m., on Thursday, March 1st. Holy Cross Cemetery.
