Gene Lloyd Stewart Obituary
Stewart, Gene Lloyd 04/15/1937 ~ 09/3/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Gene L. Stewart passed away on September 3, 2013 after a long illness. Gene was predeceased by his parents, Walter Arthur Stewart Jr. and Georgia Louise (Douglass) Stewart. He leaves his wife, Elisabeth (Fuglister) Stewart; his brother Donn Arthur (Karen) Stewart; a niece and a nephew. Gene was born in Santa Barbara, Calif. and grew up in Fillmore, where his parents were employed by the school system. In 1950 the family moved to San Diego. Gene graduated from Hoover High School, served in the National Guard and then attended college, graduating from San Diego State University in 1965 with a degree in biology. Gene joined the staff at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography where he worked in micro- zooplankton research. He left Scripps in 1978 and became involved in the engineering and design of biomedical devices, working with IMED and Winfield Corp. In 1990 he and a partner started Gamma Plastics, which specialized in custom- molding. He sold his share of the business to his partner and formed Quissett Design to continue consulting on various projects from snowboard boot lacing systems to eye suction devices and arterial patches. Gene's interests varied widely. He was involved in the dirt motorcycle sport of "trials" riding. He moved from motorcycles to bicycles and enjoyed many years of off-road cycling adventures. He became deeply involved in collecting antique stationary gasoline engines. He most enjoyed acquiring an engine in total disrepair and rebuilding it to its original state. Gene was also a fine wood craftsman. He built a beautiful 14' cosine wherry that he and his wife would row on the local bays and he enjoyed embellishing his home with fine cabinetry. There will be no public funeral service.
