JANET AHALT RODGERS Obituary
RODGERS, JANET AHALT Janet Ahalt Rodgers, Ph.D, RN, FAAN, age 77, Dean Emerita of the Hahn School of Nursing at the University of San Diego, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 of congestive heart failure at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. Janet was born on June 15, 1935 in Hershey, PA, the daughter of Margaret Bittle Ahalt and the Reverend Harold A. Ahalt. Dr. Rodgers received her BS in Nursing from Wagner College on Staten Island, NY, and her MS and Ph.D from New York University, New York, NY. During her 45-year career, she served on the faculties of Wagner College and Lehman College, CUNY; Chair of the Department of Nursing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA; Chair of the Department of Nursing at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA; and Dean of the Hahn School of Nursing at the University of San Diego from 1987 until she retired in 2002. While at USD, she initiated the masters and doctoral programs in nursing. Upon her retirement in 2002, she was enthusiastically honored by the University. April 17, 2002 was proclaimed as Dr. Janet Rodgers Day throughout San Diego County for her many contributions to the health of its citizens. Dr. Rodgers was the first woman and the first nurse to serve as Chair of the Scripps Hospital Board. She was a Fellow of the American Association of Nursing. Additionally, she has served on numerous boards and authored many professional publications. Dr. Rodgers is survived by a sister Lenore (David) Bandler of Newfield, NY; two nephews, Steven (Tara) Bandler of Needham, MA and Robert Bandler of Lansing, NY; three stepdaughters, Terry (Norton) Wheeler of Joplin, MO, Karen Rodgers of Albuquerque, NM, and Rebecca (Gordon) Blackley of Elkins, WV; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 41 years, Terry C. Rodgers, MD. She died on their wedding anniversary. A memorial service will be held at the University of San Diego at a future date to be announced. Her ashes will be interred with those of her husband in Middletown, MD. Donations may be made to the Nursing Scholarship Fund established in her name at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110-2492. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, for Janet's excellent care.
