JOHN W. CARLSON Obituary
CARLSON, JOHN W. John W. Carlson, 84, passed away peacefully in his home on February 24, 2013. John was born September 27, 1928, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the eldest son of nine children born to Charlotte (Thaung) and Walter Carlson. At the age of six, John lost his right leg and left thumb in a bicycle accident with a milk truck. In spite of this handicap, he earned the Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America prior to their separate handicap designation, performing all the same merit badge requirements of able-bodied scouts. His first job was as a newspaper carrier, enlisting the help of his brothers and sisters. He attended the University of Minnesota for two years and was a Wheel Chair basketball All-American. John moved to Escondido and then San Diego, CA in the early 1950's. John owned Auto Parts West and Nelson Auto Parts from 1956 to 1970. And then San Diego-Pacific, Inc., doing business as Sunbelt Distributing Co. and the Mr. Parts Auto Parts stores, from 1975 to 1985. He was active in the community and many philanthropic organizations, including the San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium Advisory Board from 1978 to 1990; Nice Guy of the Year in 1987; founding benefactor of the Mission Valley YMCA; Boys and Girls Club Golden Man of the Year; Copley Family YMCA Man of the year 2000; former president Hillcrest Lion's Club; former president Del Cerro Little League and long-time sponsor of Little League and Pony League Baseball and former chairman of the Aztec Classic golf tournament benefit-ting San Diego State athletics. John was always the practical joker. When he saw a child sucking his thumb, he would point to his left hand and say, "I used to do that too and look what happened to me." He would always get the same conforming reaction - you never saw a kid so quickly pull his thumb out of his mouth! He was a consummate entertainer and enjoyed hosting large parties for his close friends and members of the community. Other favorite hobbies were playing cards and boating. John was a very outgoing and generous individual and always wanted people to get along with one another. John is survived by his brother Jeff and sisters Janet, Judy, Joyce and Juliann; his three sons Todd J. (Debra A.), Gregory S. (Ann) and Kevin J. (Candace W.) Carlson; his ex-wife Margaret Carlson; seven grandchildren, Kristle, Vanessa, John, Michael, Joseph, Grant and Kylie. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marilyn J. Carlson, and siblings Jean, Jerry and Jim. Private entombment will be at Cypress View Mausoleum. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, March 1st, at Torrey Pines Christian Church, 8320 La Jolla Scenic Dr. N., La Jolla, CA 92037. A reception will follow at The Crosby Club, 17102 Bing Crosby Blvd., San Diego, CA 92127. Memorial tributes may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 152079, Irving, TX 75015; Nice Guys of San Diego, P.O. Box 881456, San Diego, CA 92168, or the San Diego State Aztec Club, 5500 Campanile Dr., San Diego, CA 92182-4313.
