Karel de Jong Obituary
de Jong, Karel SAN MARCOS -- Karel de Jong, 79, a long-time San Marcos resident, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in Tulare, California while visiting his family to attend the World Ag Expo. Karel was born on January 30, 1934 in Holland where he worked on his family's 30-cow dairy farm and also raised his own small herd of goats. In 1949, when Karel was 15, the de Jong family moved to the United States where they worked on an uncle's dairy farm, saved up their money, and pooled their resources to purchase and establish Hollandia Dairy. He married Shirley de Haan in 1966 and they were blessed with 46 years of marriage, three children, and twelve grandchildren. Karel had a creative mind and loved to invent things. He also loved to talk and enjoyed telling stories about his past, especially about his US Army days in Germany with his brother, Arie. Karel was known for having a big heart and always had a tender spot for those who were in need. He loved all his family immensely. He was a member of the Escondido United Reformed Church for over fifty years. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Brenda (John) Van Otterloo, and grandchildren, Leah, Anna, Naomi, John, and Allison; daughter, Marianne (George) Wilgenburg, and grandchildren, Hannah, Tyra, Will, and Rebekah; son, Eric John (Elizabeth) de Jong, and grandchildren, Eric, Alexa, and Brielle Karley; siblings, Tom (Hinke) de Jong, Pete (Rena) de Jong, Elso (Dita) de Jong, John (Willy) de Jong, Ellie (Wim) Griffioen, Arie (Anneke) de Jong, Jet Gailey, and Mary (Richard) Westra; and sister-in-law, Helia de Jong. He was preceded in death by brother, Kees de Jong. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at San Marcos Cemetery in San Marcos with a Memorial Service to follow at 1 p.m. at the Escondido United Reformed Church, 1864 N. Broadway, Escondido. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either Hanford Christian School in Hanford, Calif. or to Calvin Christian School in Escondido.
