Leon L. Smith Sr. Obituary
Smith Sr., Leon L. OCEANSIDE -- Leon L. Smith, Sr., 82, died on Monday, June 24, 2013. Born January 3, 1931 in Kansas City, Kan., he moved his family to So. California in 1951, traveling historic Route 66 to Los Angeles. He lived in Oceanside for 15 years. He retired as a Detective with LAPD after 31 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a youth football coach in Torrance, Calif., for five seasons from 1958 to 1962. His team, the Mustangs, won five straight league championships. He was awarded an honorary PTA life membership in 1962 by the California Congress of Parents and Teachers for his work in youth sports as a football coach, referee and Little League umpire. He was a goalie for the Hollywood Hawks and the San Diego Ravens in roller hockey leagues in the 1950s, which were televised in the L.A. and San Diego areas. In 1982, he became the first person to author a book depicting Hollywood movie and television locations in the greater L.A. area. Many books on this subject followed. He was a member of the National Film Society and a graduate of the National Writer's School and was a frequent contributor to the Letters page of the North County Times. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Smith. He is survived by his previous wife, Barbara Smith; his brother, Eugene Phillips (Eudora) of Independence, Mo.; his sons, Leon Jr.(Bunny) of Mission Viejo, Jerry Smith (Maria) of Moreno Valley Ranch; daughters, Judy Kirk, Beverly Stanzione, both of Oceanside; step-children, Valerie Durham, Paul Durham(Linda) and Terry Metoyer; grandchildren, Leon Smith III (Trish), Guy Smith (Kerrin), Jerry Smith, Jr.(Talia), Colton Smith, Deanna Kirk, Dennis Kirk, Anna Stanzione; step- grandchildren, Rick Perry, Sean Durham, Danny Metoyer and Jerry Metoyer; many great- grandchildren and one great-great- granddaughter. A funeral service will be held, 1 p.m., Monday, July 1, 2013 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park Chapel, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside. Interment will follow.
