LEONARD PEARLMAN Obituary
PEARLMAN, LEONARD A Renaissance man whose life's journey was giving plenty of love, laughter and time to family and friends, Leonard Pearlman , a 34-year resident of San Carlos, passed away at age 82 on January 27, 2013. Born in Chicago to Rubin and Esther Pearlman on August 15, 1930, he treasured music, books, puzzles, "Jeopardy," and his beloved Chicago Cubs. Len graduated from Austin High and Herzl College in Chicago. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army (communications) during the Korean War. Len found his life partner in Natalie Frankel and the couple married in 1955. They had three children, and the family moved to San Diego in 1979. Favorite family vacations were summers at South Haven, Mich. He enjoyed a 35-year career as a salesman at Sears. After retiring, Len delved into community service adventures that would define his life as a loving and tireless volunteer. He logged 17 fulfilling years at The Bookman, a San Diego nonprofit that donates books to schools, shelters and others in need. Len dedicated Friday afternoons to reading books at Soille San Diego Hebrew Day preschoolers. The children called him "Zadie." He entertained hundreds of kids with his charismatic reading style, fun spirit and twinkling hazel eyes. Favorite moments were sitting in his sunroom and reading the U-T and magazines. Sharp-witted with vast knowledge, Len could have been a "Jeopardy" champ. He enjoyed stamp collecting, cutting greenery in the yard, concerts at Balboa Park, and street and music fairs. He also enjoyed puzzles to keep his mind sharp. Len may be most remembered by his unique replacement of "hello" with "0478" when he answered his home phone. He is survived by his daughters Elyse Pearlman of Mountain Home, Idaho; Karen Pearlman of San Diego; and brother-in-law Herb Frankel, of San Diego; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Natalie; daughter, Sara Leah Overlander; and sister, Helen Pearlman. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 29th, at Home of Peace in San Diego. Shiva will be sat at the family home following burial.
