MARY WILLIAMS GRAY

Obituary Condolences

GRAY, MARY WILLIAMS Passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, after a long struggle with breast cancer. She endured her struggle with courage, grace, and humor. Born May 24, 1926 in Covington, Tennessee, she was the eldest of five children born to her parents Robert Jesse and Maude Williams. Following her graduation from Byars Hall High School in Covington, she began working for the U.S. Civil Service as a civilian employee at Millington Naval Air Station near Memphis. While working there she met a young sailor named Leonard G. Gray, also a native of Tennessee, and the two of them married in July, 1946. Leonard continued his career in the Navy and Mary in Civil Service. The family was initially stationed in the Memphis area, but transferred to Alabama and eventually to California. Mary was reluctant to stand in the spotlight, but was quietly supportive of her family and husband who volunteered at Benchley-Weinberger Elementary School, Mission Trails Park, and the USS Midway Museum. Mary was recently recognized as an Honorary Docent by the Midway for her support of the program. She was warm and charming and full of Southern wit and wisdom. Mary is survived by her husband of sixty-six years and their three daughters, Becky Weckerly (Jack), Debbie Meyer (Scott), Susie Owen (Doug); four grandchildren, Scott Andrews-Weckerly, Lori Weckerly-Nihal, Bryan Meyer, Daren Owen; and one great-granddaughter, Simone Andrews-Weckerly. A private memorial service is planned for the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to San Diego Hospice.
