Patricia Johnson Obituary

Johnson, Patricia Carol VISTA -- Patricia Carol Johnson passed away on July 13, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in her home in Vista. She was born on April 29, 1941, to Wendell and Beatrice Lorraine Naish nee Henderson. Since her father was a Navy dentist, her parents, older sister, Barbara Jean and she, moved frequently. Pat lived in ten different homes during her childhood and attended schools in California, Washington, and Florida. She graduated from Crawford High School in San Diego in 1959 and from Texas Christian University in l963. Beginning her teaching career in Vista, CA, she met Harold Johnson, who taught at the same school. They were married in 1968 and became the parents of David Michael in 1971, and Kathleen Renee and Stephen Daniel Johnson in 1974. Pat taught English, Social Studies, Spanish, and study skills at the junior high level and Spanish at the high school level. She retired from teaching in 2001. Both Harold and Pat were very active at First Lutheran Church in Vista. Pat taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for many years. She also served as Wedding Coordinator, Nursery Coordinator, and Stephen Minister at that church. When Harold and Pat transferred their membership to Christ the King Lutheran Church in 1998, Pat became active in the Hispanic Ministry and established the Laubach Literacy Center to teach English and literacy skills to speakers of other languages. She served as Director of the Center for many years and as President of Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County from June 2011, to May 2013. Pat was predeceased by her husband, Harold Johnson, who passed away in 2009. She is survived by her children, David, Kathy and Steve Johnson; her sister, Barbara of Fort Worth, TX; and cousins, Gwen Burson, Gary Henderson of Walla Walla, WA, Steve Henderson, Lyle Naish of Firestone, CO, Denice Lee of Lebanon, OR, and Judy, Donna, and Darleen nee Grindle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made either to Christ The King Lutheran Church or Susan G. Komen.

Having known Pat since the 1960's at University Christian Church, I was sorry to learn of her death. She, Barbara and their parents were a respected family within our church community.
