Mattson, Robert A. 03/23/1923 ~ 08/30/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Robert A. Mattson began his life in heaven when he was called to his mansion over the hilltop on Friday, August 30. In addition to his parents and seven siblings, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Tana, and his son, Jan. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine, his three children, Kevin, Mark, and Kim, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Robert was born on March 23, 1923, in the gold mining town of Terraville, South Dakota. He graduated from Lead High School, in 1941. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, California, and worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. Robert then joined the Navy in November of 1942 and fought in the Pacific War during World War II. Robert was married to Anna (Tana) Borud on May 27, 1944. After being discharged from the Navy, Robert received a job working for Standard Stations Inc., known today as Chevron. He was transferred to San Diego and after 38 years with Chevron, retired. After battling Alzheimer's, his wife, Tana was called home to be with the Lord on February 16, 2002. Robert and Tana were married for 58 years. After Tana's passing, Robert continued to participate in a weekly Alzheimer's Support group where he met Elaine Van Meter. Their friendship grew and they were married on June 7, 2007. Robert was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma shortly after. With the love and support of his wife and family, Robert was able to live several more years, traveling and spending time with his loved ones. Robert will be missed by all of those who loved him so dearly and were blessed to have him in their lives. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. A memorial service to celebrate Robert's life will be held at College Avenue Baptist Church, Saturday, September 7th, at 2:00 in the Fireside Room.
