Robert Cowan Cordry Obituary
Cordry, Robert Cowan 05/15/1922 - 03/04/2013 EL CAJON -- Born in the tiny farming town of Conde, South Dakota, Robert's family moved to the Claremont area of east Long Angeles in the early 1930s. Bob would eventually attend Pomona College and then enlist in the Army-Air Corps for World War II, where he served as a cryptologist. After the war, he married Marjorie Jean Hellquist of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and moved to Santa Barbara, where dad finished his teaching degree at the UC. The young couple moved to San Diego in 1948 and Bob started his teaching career at Grossmont High. He eventually helped open El Cajon High and Monte Vista High, where he was universally known as "Monte Vista Bob" or just "Cords." He loved his work and the students and approached his teaching and counseling career with unbridled enthusiasm. Bob also had an incredible green thumb and his huge rose garden in El Cajon stands as a loving testimonial to the thousands of hours he spent working his hands in the soil. Robert is survived by his three children - Scott, Jill (husband Mike) and Tad (wife Jane), Scott's children Christopher and Jules, Jill's daughter Erin, and great-grandchildren Danny, Tara and Ryder. A family service was held April 4 at Singing Hills Memorial Park.
