Kownacki, Roman J. LA JOLLA -- Roman John Kownacki, M.D., 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, January 24th, 2014. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Mary (Wahl) Kownacki; his son, Roman and his wife, Hamila; his son, John and his wife, Darcy, and his grandchildren, Cody and Jordan; his son, Steven; his son, Andrew and wife, Amy, and his grandchildren, Lauren and Erin; and many close family members and dear friends. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Roman graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he enjoyed playing the clarinet in the marching band. Following his dream of becoming a doctor, he attended Hahnemann Medical College where he completed his residency in General Surgery. Subsequent to his surgical training, he served 11 years of active duty as a Flight Surgeon in the U. S. Air Force, he then joined the Air Force Reserves serving proudly to retire as a Lt. Colonel. Dr. Kownacki was also the founder of the Foothills Surgical Medical Group in El Cajon where he practiced medicine for over forty years. Dr. Kownacki was a dedicated physician and yet made time to contribute to the community by coaching Singing Hills Little League Baseball for almost 10 years. Having lived a very full life, Roman was a great storyteller, an avid reader, and traveler. He shared a love of dancing with his wife, especially in dancing the Polka. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Dr. Roman Kownacki touched many lives professionally and personally and will be missed by us all. A memorial service will be held at El Camino Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 29th, at 12:00 p.m. at 5600 Carroll Canyon Road followed by a burial at Miramar National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life reception will be held after the burial at 3:00 p.m. at the Miramar Officer's Club, 4472 Anderson Avenue, Miramar Naval Air Station.
