Samuel Leonard Salazar Obituary
Salazar, Samuel Leonard 1925 ~ 2013 LA MESA -- Samuel Leonard Salazar, beloved Father, Grandfather, Great- Grandfather and a true Patriot, was born October 31, 1925, and passed away on September 22, 2013. His father, Alfredo Salazar, was a retired Captain of the San Diego Fire Department and was born in New Mexico. Sam's mother, Helen Chavez, was born in Colorado. His wife of 52 years passed away in 2006. He has 2 surviving children, a daughter, Jeanne Barkett, and a son, Samuel Leonard Salazar, Jr. He was the proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. "Sam", as he was known to friends and loved ones, served on the San Diego Fire Department for 27 years. He retired as a Captain following in the footsteps of his father. He has served as the President of the Fire Fighters Union and was very active in the community. He was a Veteran of World War II and received several medals while serving as an Aerial Gunner with the Army Air Force. He was proud to be a Veteran of the Korean War. He proudly served in the 140th AAA 40th Infantry Division. Sam was a highly decorated Fire Fighter as well. He was the Past President of the San Diego, High School Alumni Association. Sam has lived in and has loved San Diego his entire life. He was devoted to his family and loved to be with his grandchildren. A hero to many, laughter and sense of humor will be sorely missed. He leaves those who had the privilege to know him with fond memories. A Service will be held at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, Ca 92121, October 5, 2013, 10 a.m.
