STEVEN N. SCHWARTZ

SCHWARTZ, STEVEN N. 1945 to 2012 On the afternoon of September 27, 2012, Steven N. Schwartz, 66, died at home with his family after a twenty-month struggle with a form of lung cancer found in persons who never smoked. His life was so important to so many people; his death too soon - an unspeakable loss. Some thought his intellectual gifts defined him; but it was Steve's character that earned him the respect, trust, and love of all those fortunate to know him. He was a humble person of unshakable integrity, respectful of others in all circumstances. He could offer informed conversation on virtually any topic, but never sought the upper hand. Steve believed that charity begins at home, and devoted himself to his wife and children. Steve was a Senior Fellow and member of Casque and Gauntlet at Dartmouth College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in the class of 1967. He graduated Yale Law School in 1970 and headed west to practice law in San Diego, California. After nearly forty years in partnership with Nelson Brav, Steve surrendered his formidable business law practice in February 2011. He enjoyed the challenge of law and was especially dedicated to his long-term clients. Golf was a favorite pastime, and Steve always maintained a low, single-digit handicap. He served on the Coronado Men's Golf Club Board of Governors for six years and as club president in 2007. Steve Schwartz is survived by his wife of forty years, Deborah Schwartz, a social worker for twenty years in the Coronado Unified School District and chairperson of the Coronado Human Relations Commission for ten years - until Steve's diagnosis; his son Adam Schwartz, an emergency medicine physician at San Diego Medical Center/ Kaiser Foundation Hospital; and his daughter Jennifer Schwartz Munday, a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. Steve ceased chemotherapy for the month of June 2012 in order to feel well enough to participate in Jenny's wedding June 30th to William Robert Munday, a fourth-year medical student at the University of British Columbia. Steve is also survived by his older brother Allan Schwartz and wife June of Rockville, Maryland, and their son Matthew Schwartz of Washington, D.C.
