Winston, Sylvia Jean Thomas 04/20/1945 ~ 06/03/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Sylvia Winston passed away peacefully on June 3, 2013, after a brief illness. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Sylvia was born in Warren, PA, the daughter of Melvin and Elaine Thomas, and then moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where she attended public school and college. She married Philip E. Winston on November 28, 1968, and moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey; then to Houston, Texas; and finally, to San Diego, CA in 1977, where she resided with her family until her death. She is survived by her husband, Philip; her son, Scott Thomas Winston; and daughter, Jennifer Elaine Cesaro and son-in-law, Michael Cesaro; and a grandson, Nathan Winston Cesaro; as well as her brother, Edward Thomas and sister-in-law, Rebecca Thomas of Russell, PA. Sylvia and her husband, Philip were active in Square Dancing, the Audubon Society, Pug Rescue of San Diego County, Dixieland Jazz Festivals and Southern Gospel Conventions as well as volunteering as ushers for the San Diego Symphony and Pops Concerts. She was an Instructional Aide for 20 years in the San Diego School District and served as a Deacon in the Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church. Her strong faith in God helped her remain positive during her brief but painful illness. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, June 22nd, at the Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN), 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
