1918 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Video Memory
Olney, Thomas B. SAN DIEGO -- Tom Olney passed away peacefully on March 29, 2014, just shy of his 96th birthday. He was born in Southbridge, MA in 1918 and grew up in New Hampshire. He married Patsy J. Honeycutt in 1943. They were married 65 years until she passed away in 2008. Tom was always very proud of his family. He is survived by his children, Susan, Kurt and David Olney; grandchildren, Sean Crampton, Marshall, Karl, Ann and Scott Olney; great- granddaughter Nyana Olney; sister-in-law Marjorie Honeycutt; and niece Virginia Rubino. Tom lived a long and full life with few regrets. He retired from the army with the rank of Major. During WWII he served in the 46th Armored Infantry Battalion, 5th Armored Division earning the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. His executive role with Bekins Moving & Storage took him from California to Kansas, Texas, New Jersey and Arizona. For the past 35 years, San Diego has been his home. An accomplished painter, his travels to Europe inspired many of his paintings of landscapes and cathedrals. He was a man of many interests and enjoyed studying art history, genealogy and collecting antiques. He loved animals. His optimistic outlook on life, natural curiosity, sense of humor and "never give up" attitude was his secret to a long life. He will be deeply missed. A Visitation and Remembrance gathering will be held on April 9th from 4 to 8 p.m. at Clairemont Mortuary, 4266 Mt. Abernathy Ave., San Diego. Burial with Military Honors ceremony will be at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, at 12:30 p.m. on April 10th. A heartfelt thanks to Sharp Hospice Park View Home for the expert care and support they provided during Tom's final days and hours. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Sharp Hospice Care Fund.
