William Burrows Obituary

Burrows, William SAN DIEGO -- Born in 1918, Bill Burrows grew up from the age of 4 in Coronado, in a loving family with 7 brothers and sisters. He and his brother Percy went to Redlands University on football scholarships. It was at Redlands that Bill met the love of his life, Shirley Hubbard. After serving in World War II, Bill set up home with her back in San Diego. Besides being a great family man, Bill was a beloved teacher, coach and principal. He taught at a number of San Diego Schools for over 40 years, including many years coaching at San Diego High, and retiring as principal at Clairemont High. Everywhere he went former students would come up to him and say hello. Bill was very involved with the Downtown Lions Club for over 30 years, and he loved to play golf and watch the Chargers and Padres. But his greatest skill and joy was being the patriarch of his family. Bill is survived by his sons Bill Jr., Lloyd, Clark and Gregg as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that all love and miss him very much.

Not sure what to say?

Hello -- I was a 1965 SDHS graduate and worked as a monitor in the Vice-Principal's office. Mr. Burroughs was a great man; patient and caring with everyone. He was even understanding with the kids in the outside office, pretending not to see them when they were hiding their cigarettes and "toys,"while they waited to see him. KBH

What a great man!!! He was a friend and co-worker at SDHS with my Dad...Mr. Maxwell...the choir director. I remember how much they admired each other...and when I went to SDHS he was the "boys" Vice Principal. He was so handsome...so nice and such a BIG man...in so many ways!!! I hope you meet up with Dad in heaven...and you can talk about SDHS!!!! LuAnn

If it had not been for Coach Burroughs, at San Diego High School, along with Coach Maley and a teacher named Ruth Price Weise, I would either be dead or in jail. I graduated in 1951 and Coach Burroughs opened the door of life for me and I walked through. He was a giant in my memory and was responsible for any success I have had in my time on this plane. I will miss him.

My name is Rudy Sanchez I am 81 and I attended San Diego High. Just the other day I was talking to my granddaughter about William Burrows. I shared with her how much I admired that man. He was my Vice Principal at Memorial and when he became the Principal at San Diego High he called all us trouble makers into the office to tell us we were no longer in middle school so we better shape up! Yes he was my principal but most importantly he became my friend. He invited me over for dinner a couple of times to his home across the street from the high school and I even had the pleasure of seeing his new home in North Park. I will forever be indebted to him. He was the one who believed in me and encouraged me to apply for a civil service job at MCRD where I had the honor of working for a total of 38 years. I thank him for the wonderful man he was. I still think about him. I thank you his family for allowing me to share this. My deepest and sincerest condolences. Rudy G. Sanchez

I remember Coach Burrows when I was on the SDHS "B" Basketball team in 1948-49. He was a good teacher and his family can be very proud of the guidance and example he set for you boys under his tutelage.

"Coach" Burrows was our V/P at San Diego High School in the 1950's and a treasured man. That is not always true with the V/P, who is given the tough jobs of enforcement with the kids. He did it with a smile and was universally liked by every student. I continued to see Bill once in a while after graduation and after leaving SDSU. He always remembered my name and we had nice conversations.

Bill Burrows was a class act as our V/P and as a human being. I will always remember his great smile and friendliness. He was one in million.
