William J. O'Connor Obituary
O'Connor, William J. RANCHO SANTA FE -- William (Bill) James O'Connor Jr., passed away, at the age of 68, on July 5, 2013, in La Jolla, California. Bill was born in Santa Monica, California on August 25, 1944. He attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles, and then the University of Houston and Cal State L.A., where Bill had a successful collegiate golf career. A gifted salesman, Bill enjoyed success in virtually all of his business ventures, first as a nationally recognized insurance executive for Mutual Benefit Life and later as a real estate developer in Southern California. But Bill's greatest passion was for the game of golf. He was among the top amateur golfers in Southern California for over thirty years. He won the California State Public Links Amateur Championship in 1965, and after starting a family in 1966, he went on to become one of the most highly-acclaimed four-ball golfers in the country. Bill won more than a hundred four-ball tournaments, most notably the prestigious Champions Cup, the International Four Ball, and the National Trans-Miss. Bill also won eleven Club Championships at Riviera Country Club, making him one of the most prolific club champions in Riviera's history. Big Bill was a larger-than-life personality. He could fill any room he entered with his charm and magnetism. Ask any one of his friends and they all have a Bill O'Connor story. Even brief encounters with Bill could be unforgettable. But if there is one thing that defined Bill's character more than his charm, it was his love of competition. Bill lived to compete. Playing golf or coaching his sons' flag football teams, Bill's flame burned most brightly when he was competing. He was at his happiest when he was playing with friends, competing and laughing and joking and, most usually, winning. Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda, and by his parents William and Ruth O'Connor. He is survived by his son James O'Connor of New York, New York and his two daughters, Carmen and Ines, and by his son Robert (Jodie) O'Connor of Marin County, California and his three children Erin, Quinn and Katherine. Bill is also survived by his two sisters Mary Dion (Richard W.) of San Jose, California and Marjorie O'Connor of Austin, Texas. Funeral services and burial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California at 11:00 a.m. on July 13, 2013, with Fr. Mario Prietto, S.J. presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill's name to Loyola High School, 1901 Venice Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90006.
