ESTHER DAISY RHEIM Obituary
RHEIM, ESTHER DAISY Feb. 1, 1914 to Dec. 18, 2012 Born Esther White in Kansas City, KS in 1914, Esther's family moved to Butte, Montana when she was 14. She met Joe Rheim, the love of her life, at a church social and they married in 1934. Enthralled by palm trees and warm weather, they moved to San Diego, a land of opportunity for Joe, a graduate of Montana School of Mines with his eye on aeronautics. After working at Ryan Aviation, Joe and Fred Rohr started Rohr Aircraft Corporation in 1940. In 1941, they moved to the small town of Chula Vista which was soon changed by their new airplane engine manufacturing plant. As the company grew, so did the Rheim family. Daughter Arlene was born in 1938 and son Jim in 1942. The demand for planes in World War II made Rohr a vital enterprise and made Joe Rheim a very successful man. Esther dedicated herself to raising the children, then recreation and philanthropy. Esther was an excellent left-handed golfer at San Diego Country Club and loved to play bridge. She and Joe traveled to Europe, vacationed in Borrego Springs, and enjoyed friends and family. Generous to family members and to the community, they established a foundation to fund college for deserving students. Esther continued to administer the fund after Joe's death in 1961. From 1966 to 1986, Ester was happily married to Dr. Donald Hansen, a fellow member of SDCC. In 1992, Esther lost Arlene to cancer. Esther's son Jim was a loving source of joy and support. She was Jim's best gallery fan and followed his golf tournaments around the country. Jim and Anna Rheim wish to thank Esther's beloved niece, Majorie Robertson and her husband, Olin. They considered Esther as their mother and took great care of her in her final years. Friends who wish to honor Esther are invited to graveside services at Glen Abbey Cemetery on Sunday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to Hospice in remembrance of Esther Rheim. Esther is survived by her son, James, and grandchildren Kathy Tshcogl Loudamy, Rick Tschogl, Bob Tschogl, Rebecca Rheim Staley, and Dr. Joseph Rheim, and over 25 nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of generosity, grace and love. Her family would like to send her favorite greeting back to her in heaven - "See you later alligator; after while crocodile."
