Gaetano "Tommy" Giacalone Obituary
Giacalone, Gaetano "Tommy" 08/28/1929 ~ 04/25/2014 SAN DIEGO -- Gaetano Giacalone, 84, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily to Salvatore Giacalone and Maria Rosaria Quinci. He immigrated to San Diego at 17. He worked at Sun Harbor Fish Cannery before completing barber college and was proud to be a barber for 54 years. Gaetano loved his faith, family, friends, his customers, food, cooking and opera. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church and a member of The Mazara del Vallo Club. Gaetano never married or had children, but loved his many nieces, nephews and God children as his own. He will be dearly missed. Gaetano is survived by his loving brother, Giuseppe Giacalone (Angie), step-sister Virginia Marino, nieces and nephews, including Maria Castagnola (Louis), Salvatore Giacalone (Carissa), Angela LoCoco (Nicola), and predeceased by niece Josie. We would like to thank doctors and nurses at Sharp Memorial Hospital Oncology for their compassionate care during his final months. Viewing Sunday, May 4, 4 to 7 p.m. Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Avenue. Rosary and funeral mass, Monday, May 5, 9:30 a.m. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 1668 State St. Entombment to follow at Greenwood.
