Delbert "Del" Walden Obituary
Video Memory
Walden, Delbert "Del" SAN DIEGO -- Del went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 29, 2014. He was born October 22, 2917 in San Diego to Claud and Virginia Walden. The youngest of five siblings, including three older brothers, Del excelled in sports. At San Diego High School, he received all-state honors in football and wrestling, earning a football scholarship to USC upon graduation in 1945. Del was selected for the U.S. Olympic wrestling team before a knee injury ended his wrestling career. Finishing his football career at San Diego State College Del graduated in 1949 with a teaching credential. Del met the love of his life, Juanita Reasoner, and they were married in 1951. Del was soon drafted into the Army for the Korean War where he served with distinction, earning the 'Soldier of the Year' award for the North East Air Command. After the war, Del began his career as a teacher in the Sweetwater High School District. He went back to college, taking evening classes to obtain a master's degree in Administration. Del became vice principal and then principal at Castle Park Jr. High School for many years before finishing his career as principal of Chula Vista Jr. High School. Del and Juanita spent their free time working on her folk's avocado ranch, camping and serving with the youth ministry at church. In 1959, they adopted a baby boy and two years later adopted a set of identical twin girls. Del and Juanita volunteered their time with Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, overseeing many camping trips. The last decades of their life together were devoted to their kids and grandkids, although Del and Juanita managed to take several romantic cruises together. After 57 years of a truly loving and happy marriage, Juanita passed away in 2008. Although lost without her, Del continued to devote himself to the needs of those around him. Del spent his life serving others, following the example of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Del is survived by his son, Greg Walden of St. Paul, MN; his daughter, Lauren Walden of Chula Vista; and his daughter, Julie Ruch of Sutherlin, OR; as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Glen Abbey Mortuary on Saturday, July 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Glen Abbey Mortuary Chapel on Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m., followed by graveside services.
