SANDY BROWN Obituary
BROWN, SANDY Beloved and lovely wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, Sandy passed away from a cerebral aneurysm on January 12, 2012, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. She was born to Myron and Jean Jones, in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 25, 1938, moved to Columbus, attended school in Upper Arlington and graduated from Dublin High School in Dublin, Ohio. In the summer of 1957, she met her sweetheart Dick Brown on a blind date at The Ohio State University. They were married on August 15, 1958, at the Dublin Community Church. She received her Bachelor's degree in Education in 1959 from The Ohio State University. In 1960, after teaching briefly in the Columbus City Schools, she and Dick decided to pursue adventure, and shortly thereafter set out on a cross-country camping trip, exploring and staying at many national parks, on their way to the West Coast to pursue teaching careers in San Diego. She took a brief break from teaching when her children Jenny and Steve were born. Sandy was an elementary school teacher for the San Diego City School District, teaching at Wegeforth, Green, and most recently Kate Sessions Elementary. After her retirement in June 1994, Sandy spent many hours with her nose buried in a good book, bragging to friends about her granddaughters, catching movies with girlfriends, and caring for her husband Dick. Her smile, bright blue eyes, and affirmative, positive spirit lighted up a room, and she selflessly supported those she loved. She stayed active in the community - volunteering at the Scripps Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the University City Women's Bible Group. She was a Life Member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association. She and her husband Dick are members of the Church of the Good Samaritan. Sandy is survived by her husband Dick Brown, children Jenny Leavitt (Eugene, OR) and Steve Brown (Kristen - Lake Tahoe), granddaughters Arcata Leavitt and Hannah Brown, brother Mark Jones (Columbus, OH), and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her brother Mike Jones. A Celebration of Sandy's Life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 10 a.m., at the Church of the Good Samaritan, 4321 Eastgate Mall, San Diego, 858-458-1501. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Sandy's memory to the San Diego Public Library Foundation - University City Branch - or to the Sandy Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund account at U.S. Bank for her granddaughters Hannah and Arcata.
