ROBERT B. FEHLMAN Obituary
FEHLMAN, ROBERT B. April 16, 1927 to December 20, 2012 Reverend Doctor Robert Fehlman passed away with his loving family surrounding him. Bob, was a Methodist clergyman for 63 years in New York and California. His last appointment was at La Jolla United Methodist Church, where he was senior minister for 11 years. Bob was born in Syracuse, New York in 1927, of parents John and Genevieve Fehlman. His sister Bernie and brother Bill still live in the Upstate area. He graduated class valedictorian from his high school and Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University in 1947. Bob was a lifelong Syracuse Orangeman fan. His postgraduate degree was at Boston University School of Theology. Bob was president of his class and again Magna Cum Laude. At BU, he met Fran Yeager from Phoenix, also a student at the School of Theology. They were married in the spring of 1950. Bob was awarded a scholarship by BU to attend Cambridge University in England, where both he and Fran studied. They returned to the United States in 1953 with their first born, Mark, on the Queen Mary. His first appointment was to Westside Methodist Church in Elmira, New York. After five years, he was appointed assistant minister to Reverend Charles Kendall at Hollywood Methodist Church. He was also the senior minister at Chatsworth, Point Loma, Clairemont, and La Jolla churches. Bob was very active in the community. In La Jolla, he was President of the La Jolla Rotary, the board for the La Jolla YMCA, and the San Diego Interfaith Council. His favorite place in the world was the family lake house at Skaneateles Lake, in upstate New York. Throughout his life, the family would travel to the lake to stay for a week or two, fishing, boating and playing cards with his many relatives and family members. These were the happiest times together. He is survived by his beloved wife Dr. Fran Yeager Fehlman who was his partner in his ministry and a psychology professor at three colleges in Southern California. His oldest son Mark (wife Anne) is a San Diego architect and artist. Daughter Jennifer (husband Bob) is an attorney in San Luis Obispo. Jill (partner Frank) is an RN and Diabetes Educator living in Encinitas. Paul (wife Michelle) is a vice president in charge of Investor Relations for the Floserve Corporation in Dallas. He is also survived by multiple loving grandchildren. The family is very happy that he is with the God that he served his whole life. He was an example of living life with commitment, purpose and integrity. He will be missed. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley located at 2111 Camino Del Rio South, San Diego, CA. A reception will follow in the Reception Hall. In lieu of flowers, Bob asked that you would make a donation in his name, to First United Methodist Church.
