Dolores Marie Guidry Doucette Obituary
Doucette, Dolores Marie Guidry SAN DIEGO -- Dolly, the center of our lives, died peacefully on February 23, 2013. Although she is gone, her joyful heart and effervescent personality remains in our memory and continues to sustain us. Dolores Marie Guidry Doucette was born in Los Angeles on October 26, 1931, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth "Betty" Barker, and baby sister to our aunts, Patricia "Pat" and Betty Joyce. She spent her early childhood in San Gabriel Canyon, where her father worked as a surveyor on the construction of the San Gabriel Dam. She recalled living in the canyon "great fun", and enjoyed reminiscing about family hikes in the mountains, the great flood of 1936, and studying in a one room school. When the family moved back to LA, Dolly took care of the family chickens. She graduated from Dorsey High School in 1950. Dolly became a young Navy wife when she married our father, Leroy "Skip" Guidry who was a WWII army buddy of her sister Pat's husband, Jerry. Navy life took Dolly and Skip to several different cities in Florida and California, and then to Midway Island (where she would rescue orphaned gooney birds, and bring them home for meals of sardines!). Four children were born along the way, with Skip sometimes nervously pacing the hospital waiting room, and sometimes receiving news of a child's birth by telegram. Besides being involved in our school activities, she was an active member of St. Columba church in Serra Mesa and bowled on several bowling leagues. After her husband Skip's death, Dolly met George "Bud" Doucette through mutual friends, and they soon married. They enjoyed traveling to New Zealand, the British Isles and visiting Bud's family in Boston. Dolly also began a 20 year commitment to serving housebound seniors with Meals on Wheels. Bud died after 23 years of marriage, and Dolly filled her days with tending her patio garden filled with lovely plants and hummingbirds, watching the Lakers and tennis. Gathering with family brought her the most joy. Besides her children, Frances Montgomery (Bill), Glen Guidry (Patricia), Tricia Guidry, and Caryl Holt (Jim), Dolly leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Jonathan Montgomery (Michelle), Katherine M. Lewis (Adam), Cameron Holt and great-grand- children Quinn and Evelyn Montgomery and Heaven and Trinity (step- grandchildren of Glen). Dolly's extended family also includes brothers-in-law Jerry Sullivan (married to sister Pat) and Jerry Doucette, and step-sons, James Doucette and Donald Doucette, and their families. Also grieving, are Dolly's nephews and nieces, the beloved children of her two deceased sisters. We will celebrate Dolly's life at Kate Sessions Park, on Saturday, March 30th, at 11am, and invite those who knew and loved her to join us. Interment will take place at a later date, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor our mother by contributing to causes reflecting her love of nature, animals and the world's poor. We suggest The Yosemite Conservancy, www. yosemiteconservancy. org, your local Humane Society, or Heifer International, www. heifer.org.
