Joseph Doyle Obituary

Dr. Joseph J. Doyle, 86, was born in Philadelphia. He died April 14, 2013 in Ithaca, N.Y. of complications from a stroke suffered in January 2011.
Dr. Doyle and his wife of 62 years, Grace Doyle, lived in Williamsburg from 1978 until they moved to Ithaca in November 2011 to be near their son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Jane Doyle. Dr. Doyle is survived by his wife and son.
He taught for many years at Thomas Nelson Community College, Christopher Newport University, and for the Department of Defense. He was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg, serving as Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister. He was also an active member of the Williamsburg Bird Club and other local social organizations.
Dr. Doyle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After graduating as valedictorian from LaSalle College in Philadelphia, completing a Master's degree at Fordham University in New York City, and studies at the Universidad de la Habana, he worked and traveled extensively in Latin America.
In 1967, he earned a Ph.D. from The George Washington University after completing three years of research in Venezuela. Upon return from Venezuela, Dr. Doyle taught part time at the University of Virginia and the Northern Virginia Community College. In 1973, he graduated from the U.S. Air War College in Montgomery, Al.
Before his retirement, Dr. Doyle was for many years a senior official of the Central Intelligence Agency as a specialist in Latin American affairs. In 1981, he was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on June 13 at St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg. A reception will follow immediately, also at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Williamsburg (4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188), Little Sisters of the Poor (1503 Michaels Rd., Henrico, VA 23229), or St. Bede Catholic Church (PO Box 5400, Williamsburg, VA 23188).
