WILLIAMSBURG - Christine Louise Smith Zoglman, 69, of Williamsburg, Virginia died on March 7, 2014. Chris, who will not be called Christine again, was born in Corunna, Michigan on October 17, 1944, and lived an idyllic life with Leo and Louise Smith playing flute and marching in the Corunna High School Cavalier band. She majored in business education at Central Michigan University where she was active in the sorority Alpha Chi Omega. Her business degree led her to share her typing and shorthand skills with others as a business teacher in Essexville, Michigan. On a weekend trip in May 1966 with friends, she met the man who would be her life-long partner, First Lieutenant Robert Zoglman. Their love grew quickly and on September 28, 1966, Chris and Bob married. They moved whenever and wherever the Army ordered them to do so. They welcomed Carrie Royce while Bob was finishing his degree, also at Central Michigan University. Chris embraced her role as a military wife and put her career as a teacher on hold to support the family in their many moves. The Army recognized her with the Molly Pitcher Award for her service. Chris always become active in her community no matter the zip code or the country. She has participated in homeowner's associations, book clubs, and PTAs. She worked in many school offices and libraries, folded altar linens and arranged altar flowers, and taught homebound high school students. Her hands were never idle, either. Her creative talent was not limited to her music. She has painted many pictures that hang in her home as well as the home of her daughter. She has created myriad needlepoint projects, quilts, stained glass, and decoupage to commemorate Bob's Army appointments, vacation memories, holidays, and to welcome new family and friends. She even created the mats and frames for many of these creations. In 1992, when her family transitioned to their new lives as civilians in Northern Virginia, Chris returned again to the business community. This time she was the office manager embracing the much advanced technology since she had last been in the business sector. Shorthand was no longer required, but when one can type with her speed, it simply didn't matter. In 2009, Bob and Chris finally settled into their forever home in Ford's Colony, Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the house of their dreams with room to entertain and kitchen to make every recipe ripped out of magazines or drooled over on the Food Network. Chris and Bob even thought of visitors given their ideal location. There is plenty of room to host overnight guests, including their daughter and her family. She was very active in their church, Hickory Neck, as an usher and member of the prayer shawl guild. Her husband, Bob Zoglman, daughter Carrie Bartlett, son-in-law Dave Bartlett, and grandchildren Spencer and Alexandra Bartlett will miss her greatly but are grateful that she will be welcomed to heaven by her mother and father Leo and Louise Smith. You are invited to join in a Celebration of Life Service to be held at Hickory Neck Church on March 17, 2014 at 1:30pm. Donations may be made to the Hickory Neck Church Foundation (8300 Richmond Rd., Toano, VA 23168). Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Bob, you and Chris were kind enough to "adopt" me into your family when I moved to the DC area. You both always looked out for me and greatly helped to make it become my home. Nick and I both look back fondly on the dinners and concerts the four of us shared. We will forever cherish the beautiful quilts she sent when our kids were born! We will choose to celebrate the wonderful life she had, her sense of humor and her generous spirit. You and Carrie are in our thoughts and prayers.
