Bessie Parker Ashby died peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2011, in her home.
Her life began on June 14, 1912, the daughter of Harriet and Samuel Parker of York Street in Williamsburg.
She was a graduate of James City County Training School and Virginia State College, Petersburg. She was certified as an elementary school teacher
She began her professional teaching career in Bahamsville School. She also taught in Mount Holly, Chickahominy and Bruton Heights schools. In 1977, she retired from Matthew Whaley School, after years of dedicated service.
Mrs. Ashby was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a lifelong member of the NAACP, a member of the Williamsburg James City County Training School Alumni, the Virginia State College Alumni, a founding member of the National Council of Negro Women and Business and Professional Women.
She was united in Holy Matrimony with Robert Ashby. Unto this union, they were blessed with two loving children.
Mrs. Ashby was a lifelong resident of Williamsburg. She loved the city, her family, her schools and her church, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, Robert Ashby Jr. (Melinda Reid); her daughter, Judith Ashby Huckaby (Ernest); her four grandchildren; her nine great-grandchildren and other loving relatives and many caring friends.

A homegoing service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 805 Stuart Circle by 10 a.m. on Thursday. Mrs. Ashby may be viewed in the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
