Hannelore "Hanna" Surber

WILLIAMSBURG - Hannelore "Hanna" Surber passed away on July 17, 2014. She was born on October 26, 1933 in Hamburg, Germany. She became a US citizen in 1959. Hannelore was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Surber and Shirley Ortery. She is survived by a son-in-law, Doug Ortery of Newport News; a grandson, Bryan Ortery (and Stephanie) of Gloucester; and five great-grandchildren, Alex, Bryan, Jr., Joshua, Logan and Morgan. She was employed by the Department of the Army at Ft. Eustis for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1995. Hannelore was an avid athlete who still played tennis, snow-skied, biked and walked until just before her passing. She led a full life, having traveled the world. She was fluent in English, German and French and studied to learn Spanish. She was also very active in the community. Hannelore was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 11am, at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188.
