Inell Slade Halcomb

Inell Slade Halcomb, 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012. She was born in Williamsburg on July 11, 1916, to the late Thomas and Pearl Slade. In 1934, she graduated from James City County Training School. After graduating, she attended Virginia State University. She began her professional career working for Charlie Gary's Tailor Shop as a clerk. She retired from Colonial Williamsburg as a supervisor at the Williamsburg Inn. Upon her retirement, she worked for the Peninsula Agency on Aging as a site coordinator.
On Jan. 29, 1944, Inell joined hands in Holy Matrimony with the late Haywood Beverly Shearin Sr. until his passing in1951. Later, she joined hands in marriage with the late James Oscar Halcomb.
In her youth, she confessed Christ as her Personal Savior and joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Upon the family moving to the Grove area, she joined hands in fellowship with Mount Gilead Baptist Church and was a devoted member and leader for over 50 years.
Inell was an active and engaged community member belonging to several clubs and organizations, including the Just Us Club, the Order of the Eastern Star Pride of Grove Chapter 181, the NAACP, and the National Council of Negro Women.
She is survived by her loving children, Haywood Beverly Shearin Jr. (Marian) of Williamsburg and Sylvia Shearin Willis of Newport News; her grandchildren, Davida Inell Arnold (Shaka ) of Baltimore, Md., Verita Mason Frempong (Kofi), of Bowie, Md., and Phillip Haywood Shearin of Mexico City, Mexico; her great-grandchildren, Zoya Inell Arnold, Hanna Arnold, Joza Arnold, and Ina Arnold, all of Baltimore, and Garrett Frempong, of Bowie; her beloved cousin, Gertrude Thornton, of Williamsburg; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, in Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 8660 Pocahontas Trail, with Bishop William M. Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in Little Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 112 Indian Circle by 10 a.m. on Saturday.
