James W. Duff Jr., 73, passed away on October 14, 2012 after an extended illness. Jim was born to James and Isabel Duff in Hendersonville, NC on April 21, 1939. After leaving Blue Ridge School for Boys in 1957, he attended Davidson College and earned one of the school's worst records. He then joined the U.S. Navy
. After his service, he attended Western Carolina University where he received his degree while working in the pro shop at Maggie Valley Golf and Country Club. Needless to say, his professors became better golfers and his grades reflected this association. While at Western, he met and married Gail Christian in the University Chapel. The marriage produced three sons, Lee, Scott and the late Chris Duff, who passed away on May 14, 2009.
The Duff family moved to Richmond, VA after graduation, where Gail taught school and Jim received his master's degree and remained on the Virginia Commonwealth University faculty until 1974. They then moved to Williamsburg, where Jim was hired as Director of Personnel at Eastern State Hospital. He was later promoted to Administrator-Support Services, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. His twin sons, Lee and Scott, were born in 1978 during his tenure with the hospital.
It was Jim's wish to acknowledge that any successes he enjoyed during his married life were directly attributed to his wife of 47 years and the patience of his fishing partner.
Services will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, October 18 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
