Major W. Jordan, 99, died on Monday, June 20, 2011, at Mary Immaculate Hospital.
His life began on March 14, 1912. He confessed Christ in 1925 and joined Stan Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County. When his family moved to the Williamsburg area, he joined St. John Baptist Church in 1939 by Christian experience.
He became a member of the Board of Trustees in 1952, and served as chairman 1961-71, and relinquished his duties as a member in 1989. He was a member of the Men's Chorus and assistant teacher of the adult class of the Sunday school. He attended Bible Study and Prayer Service regularly.
On June 2, 1934, he was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Bertha A. Jordan. Unto this union, they were blessed with two loving daughters and one son.
Mr. Jordan was employed at Max Reig's Metal Craft Company as a metal craftsman, Naval Weapons Station in sheet metal, and retired after 25 years of service as craftsman at Shirley Metal Craft, a maker of fine pewter ware. After retirement, he worked part-time for 12 years as a van driver for Peninsula Agency on Aging.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha A. Jordan, and son, Major W. Jordan Jr.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories two daughters, Anne Allen and her husband, Vernon, Barbara Jones and her husband, Wilbert; one foster daughter, Casandra Williams; four grandchildren, Kevin Allen (Gloria), Keith Allen, Dorenda Edwards (Ronnie), and Glenn Jones Sr.; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-children; four sisters; two brothers, one sister-in-law: two foster grandsons and one foster granddaughter, his special caregiver, a host of loving nieces and nephews, and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held in St. John Baptist Church, Penniman Road, on Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A wake was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June, 24, in the funeral home.
