Margaret Kirby Whitehorne

Mrs. Margaret Kirby Whitehorne, 88, of Charlottesville, died of natural causes on March 26, 2013 at the Colonnades Senior Center.
Margaret was born in Portsmouth, Va. on March 20, 1925 to the late Ralph Eden Kirby and Margaret Joyner Kirby. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1942, and worked as an office clerk at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War II.
In 1946 she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Alvin (Al) Whitehorne, also of Portsmouth. They moved to Blacksburg, where Mr. Whitehorne completed his education and started his engineering and business career, and where they started their family.
After several interim locations, they settled in Chappaqua, NY in 1958 where they completed raising their children. After Al's retirement from business, they settled in Williamsburg in 1983 before moving to Charlottesville in 2008.
Margaret enjoyed church projects and activities, bowling, gardening, and needlework. Mostly she loved being a devoted, full-time wife and mother. She and Al shared 63 wonderful years together before he preceded her in death in 2010.
Margaret is survived by her brother, Ralph E. Kirby of Atlanta; daughter Lynn Sacco and her husband, Michael, of Vienna, Va.; a son, Robert Whitehorne and his wife Carolyn of Grand Junction, Co.; daughter Cynthia Moore and her husband Bill of Crozet; grandchildren Jeffrey, Emily, Melissa, Bryan, Julia and Colin; and great grandchildren Madilyn, Sienna and Will.
All of Margaret's family and friends will remember the love and kindness she bestowed upon everyone. The family would like to thank the staffs of the Colonnades and Hospice of the Piedmont for their wonderful care and support. Very special love is extended to Mom's dear friends Tracy and Shannon.
A memorial service will be held in the Monroe Room at the Colonnades at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Way, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va., 22911.
