Mary Olivia Owens died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, in Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, surrounded by many loving family and friends.
Her life began on Oct. 8, 1936, the daughter of the late James Arthur and Pearl Douglas Jimmerson of Williamsburg. In her youth, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She often attended Mount Calvary Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by eight of her siblings. She is survived by her children, Wander Shackleford (Kenneth), Phyllis Gilliam, Patricia Gray (Bernard), Preston Owens Jr. and Joyce Edwards (Kenneth); her 17 grandchildren; her 31 great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandson; her sisters, Margaret Jennings, Thelma Johnson and Louise Fowler; her brother, Raymond Jimmerson (Elizabeth); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many caring friends.
Mrs. Owens had a passion for people, especially children. She generously shared her nurturing spirit. She was an avid softball player and loved to fish and hang out with her family. She was a godsend to everyone she came in contact with and touched the lives of so many people. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, March 4, in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald A. Ellis and Pastor Rudyard Lord officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 114 Cotswold Court by noon on Friday. Mrs. Owens may be viewed in the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday.
