Maude Estelle (Smith) Kilgore

Maude Estelle Smith Kilgore, 86, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 in Williamsburg Sentara Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born May 9, 1927 in Columbia, N.C. to Victoria Dillon Smith and Iredell Sylvanias Smith. She graduated from Columbia High School, where she was a basketball standout. She was awarded an athletic scholarship to East Carolina Teacher's College, now East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. After college, Maude moved to Norfolk, where she met and married her soul-mate, Ernest Ruben Kilgore, Sr. in 1948. They were happily married for 65 years.
Maude was a member of the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church and was very involved with her husband, Ernie, in designing and constructing the church's Memorial Gardens. She was an active member of the Patriots Red Hats Club and a past official of TOPS. Maude was an avid lover of nature and loved gardening, bird watching, painting and floral design. She was a Certified Floral Judge with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and charter member and officer of Friendly Garden Club of Norfolk.
Maude is survived by her spouse, Ernest, of Lenexa; her daughter Carolyn Richardson and spouse Kenny of Raleigh, N.C.; sons Ernest Kilgore, Jr. and spouse Diann, both missionaries in Guatemala, and Robert Warren Kilgore and spouse Arlene, of Norfolk; grandchildren Shelley Casey, Jared Kilgore, Clayton Kilgore, Shawn Kilgore, and Mary Sanders as well as nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church. Rev. Jennifer Ryu will officiate.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in her name to the Memorial Gardens Committee, Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists, 3051 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, 23185.
