Raymond Charles Basley, CDR, USN, SC (Ret.) passed away on March 22, 2013, at the age of 78.
Ray was born in Paterson, N.J. on June 8, 1934. He spent his early years in Franklin Lakes, N.J. When he was 13, he moved with his family to Pompton Plains, N.J., where he attended Pompton Plains Grammar School and he met his future wife, Shirley, and also Butler High School.
After graduation from Butler, he attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. When he reached Third Classman, Ray traveled the world on merchant ships. He graduated and received his commission in the U.S. Navy
on Aug. 2, 1957, and the following day he married Shirley. Ray served 22 years in the U.S. Navy, during which time he and his family traveled frequently. He retired from Cheatham Annex in Williamsburg. After retirement, he was active with Drive Safe in York County, VFW
Post 4639 in Williamsburg, and numerous other organizations.
Ray leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Jo-Ann Cole and her husband, Ray; his wife, Shirley Basley; sons Randall and Reed Basley; daughters Allison Basley and Sheena Wallace; five grandchildren: Michael Goodsell, Elijah Lohman, Amanda Basley, Robin and Taylor Wallace; great grandson Patterson Goodsell; and eight nieces and three nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Edith and Charles Basley, and his sister Eileen Cronenwett.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, March 30 at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, 612 Jamestown Rd,, Williamsburg.
