Robert Louis Petersen, Lieutenant, United States Navy
, retired, was born in Wilmington, California and was a longtime resident of Williamsburg, Virginia. He returned to his Heavenly Father on September 26, 2013. His loved ones will be there to meet him: Dora, his beloved wife of 69 years, his parents Neils and Emogene, his sister and his three brothers.
Robert leaves behind his three children, Robert Petersen Jr. of Williamsburg, Virginia, Jeanne Ellis and husband David of Glen Bernie, Maryland and Harold Petersen and wife Karen Sue of Farmington, Utah as well as eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He loved each one and was loved in return.
Robert, one of the "greatest generation," joined the United States Navy in 1946. During WWII
he served in combat on several ships including the USS New Mexico and USS Atlanta. He retired from the United States Navy in 1965 from service aboard the USS Forrestal. He then worked for the Department of the Navy as a civil servant.
To the very end of his life Robert kept abreast of current affairs. He held strong civic and political opinions and worked to make a better community, both globally and locally. During his lifetime he enjoyed carpentry, gardening and watching football. He was always ready to cheer for his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2017 Newman Road (State Road 646), Williamsburg, Virginia. Burial will be Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Virginia. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
