Stanley M. "Stan" Giddings

Stanley (Stan) M. Giddings of Williamsburg passed away Aug. 9, 2013. He was born June 24, 1924, raised in Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School in 1941.
He was a World War II veteran and a graduate of Virginia Tech with bachelor's and master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret; daughter Janice Whitaker and her husband, Rusty, of Richmond; grandchildren Brittany and Kim and their spouses; a great granddaughter of Virginia; his brother-in-law and wife, Alfred and Cathy; and his sister-in-law Amelia, all of Connecticut. Stan is predeceased by his son, Stanley M. Giddings, Jr.; his brother, Charles, and sister, Nancy.
Stan worked in Technical Division of the Engineering Dept of Newport News Shipbuilding in 1950, then moved on to a 38-year career with the DuPont company where he worked in Engineering, Research, Manufacturing and Business Management. His job took him to Europe and Japan many times. In addition, he and his wife traveled a good part of the world, visited all 50 U.S. states, 48 of them with his children.
In retirement Stan and Margaret moved from Wilmington, De. To Kingsmill in 1988, and to Williamsburg Landing in 2007.They were both active in church and civic affairs at each location they lived during their married life.
In Williamsburg Stan was active in tennis, golf, biking and swimming and an avid reader. He was a builder of fine furniture and an artist. In addition to the Baptist church, he was active in the Colonial Capital Kiwanis Club, having served as President and Lt. Governor of the division. He was also an active member of the Crown Colony Club. He was a wonderful caring husband and father.
A memorial service will take place 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Williamsburg Baptist Church, 227 Richmond Rd. with a reception following at The Landing.
Memorials can be made to the Williamsburg Baptist Church or Children's Hospital in Norfolk.
