Anne Marie (Hill) Galloway

1920 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Anne Marie (Hill) Galloway Obituary
Anne Marie Hill Hunter Galloway passed away suddenly on September 8, 2012 at Williamsburg, VA. She was a long-time resident of Williamsburg Landing Retirement Community to which she moved from Marshfield, MA in 1985.

She was born in 1920 at Ancon, Panama Canal Zone to Ira B. Hill, an officer in the US Army Coast Artillery Corps, and Anna Marie Storck, the daughter of a Coast Artillery officer.

Anne grew up as an "army brat," attending Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, HI and graduating from Duluth High School in Duluth, MN in 1936. She then attended the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, and graduated from Maryland College for Women, Lutherville, MD with a bachelor's degree in 1940. During World War II, she served in the US Army Chemical Warfare Service.

Anne married John B. Hunter II in 1943, then an officer in the United States Marine Corps, after receiving a proposal by letter while he was serving on Guadalcanal. She lived for forty years in Marshfield, MA while raising a son and daughter, and taught first grade there for twenty years.

After the death of her first husband in 1979, Anne settled in Williamsburg near another childhood home, Fort Monroe. Here, at Williamsburg Landing she met and married her second husband, Arthur Lee "Red" Galloway, a retired United States Army officer, in 1990. Red passed away in 1992 and Anne continued to live at Williamsburg Landing.

Anne actively participated in amateur theatrical performances, and was an avid gardener, belonging to the North River Gardeners in Norwell, MA, which maintained herb and flower gardens at historical houses. In Williamsburg, she was an active member of Bruton Parish and the Society of Daughters of the United States Army. She volunteered at Williamsburg Hospital, the Williamsburg Colonial Restoration and the Fort Monroe Casemate Museum.

Anne is survived by her brother, Dr. John Hill (Catherine) of Baltimore, MD; son, Dr. J. Bradford Hunter (Susan) of Fairfax VA; daughter, Phoebe Hunter Kelly (Michael) of Santa Monica, CA; grandson, Max Hunter Senchak of Santa Monica, CA, granddaughter, Anna Ashley Hunter of Fairfax, VA; and stepdaughter, Sallie Galloway Gill (George) of Barrington, IL.

A memorial service, with reception following, will be held at the Anderson Auditorium, Williamsburg Landing, 5700 Williamsburg Landing Drive, Williamsburg, VA, at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, October 26, 2012. Anne will be interred with her first husband and his family in the Hunter family plot in Massachusetts in a private ceremony.

Donations may be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (http://www.lls.org/). Online condolences may be expressed at www.nelsencares.com.
